What is Thought Field Therapy?
Thought Field Therapy (TFT) was founded in 1980 by one of America’s most experienced and distinguished Clinical Psychologists, Dr Roger Callahan PhD. He was dissatisfied with conventional therapy techniques which he found to be too time consuming and largely ineffective. Dr Callahan was already working on and interested in alternative therapies, including Acupunture and Applied Kinesiology (AK) which addressed the body’s energy meridian system, and he realised that some of its techniques could have an application in the rapid and efficient diagnosis and permanent treatment of negative emotions such as phobias and traumatic stress.
Over many years of research and experimentation, Dr Callahan developed and perfected Thought Field Therapy, and it quickly became apparent that by tapping on the correct meridians on the body in a specific sequence for each problem (this is called an algorithm), his clients were enjoying a remarkably high success rate in having their problems cured, quickly and permanently.
TFT is used to treat negative emotions including:
Phobias Anxiety Anger
Rage Guilt Trauma
OCD Addictive Urges Embarrassment
Shame Panic Attacks Grief
Rejection (love pain) Jet Lag Negative Thoughts
So how does TFT (tapping) actually work?
By tapping on the correct meridian points in a very specific sequence, these negative emotions can be deactivated, rather like ‘switching off’ the emotional experience. This means that the individual can now think about what troubled them before (they will still be able to remember everything about it), but the sometimes crippling emotion (grief, anger, guilt etc) associated with it will be gone. The areas that you may tap on include various places on the face, the collarbone, under the arm, the hand and head.
How many sessions might be required and will the effects last?
TFT treatments generally work immediately, therefore for a simple problem, a single session lasting 30 – 90 minutes is usually all that is required, possibly with a follow-up session some time later. You may also be advised to do some tapping at home if I think that this will be of benefit. However, please note that for more complex problems, further sessions may be required, as layers of problems reveal themselves, so you should be prepared for this potential eventuality. For most problems, when the correct tapping sequence is administered, the negative emotion will disappear and the effect will endure over time. One exception is in the treatment of addictions, where the tapping sequence may have to be repeated.
